You all know that Sheriff Don Smith has fanned the flames of fear and hatred of immigrants (and people who look or sound like they might be immigrants), and his admitted lies (including under oath = perjury) are going to cost Putnam County taxpayers hundreds of thousands, possibly tens of millions of dollars in new taxes because the county government has decided that we have to cover judgments against the Sheriff.
Several of you have said that you want a chance to do something about it. And here is your chance. The Democrats have found someone willing to run against Smith. Robert Langley is from Philipstown. My information is sketchy but he is apparently retired after many (23?) years of working in Law Enforcement including in the Sheriff's dept and the Mahopac Fire Department. He's a credible candidate, and with Smith's candidacy discredited by his recent rash of misdeeds, there may be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to flip this seat. Doing so would not only be a big benefit to the various groups of citizens that are being persecuted by the current sheriff, but also might signal the start of a turnaround in Democratic fortunes in Putnam County.
The next step is to get Langley onto the ballot, which requires about a thousand names on petitions. Because of the way that this is unfolding, the petitions need to be completed in about a week, which is very challenging. We need all hands on deck to try to get this done. What is needed is people who are registered Democrats in New York State (it does not matter where in NY State you live) to pick up the petitions, to get a list of the rules of petitions and a list of local registered Democrats and their addresses, and then go out in pairs, knock on doors, and ask people to sign. It's really not difficult or scary.
If you know anyone from your local Democratic committee, tell them that you want to petition for the Sheriff position. If not, just comment and Dwight will try to get you in touch with the right people,
