Tell Your State Senator: Protect the Hudson from Oil Barges
Can we count on you to defend the Hudson from 43 newly proposed anchorage grounds, likely for oil barges?
In response to public concern, a bill (S.5197a/A.6825a) has been introduced into the New York State Senate and Assembly to amend an existing law which would provide the state with an important tool to defend important ecological and economic areas of the river.
Urge your NYS Senators to cosponsor and urge passage of S.5197a, legislation to increase the state’s role over the siting of dangerous oil barges on the Hudson.
The anchorage request comes amid a number of efforts to significantly increase the use of the Hudson as an oil shipping hub. Despite industry claims that the expansion is necessary for safety, the proposal aims to expand industrial use of the River, particularly crude oil transport.

What to Say
Hi, I’m (name) from (town). I’m calling to ask my senator to co-sponsor S.5197a (Serino) and urge leadership to pass the “Anchorage Avoidance Zone” bill.
Here’s some additional points:
· The Legislature needs to act quickly before the session ends in June.
· The Maritime Industry is requesting to add 43 new anchorage sites on the Hudson River from Yonkers to Kingston, and the Coast Guard could move forward with the rulemaking process at any time.
