Westchester Residents Rally Against Privatization & Expansion of County Airport
WHITE PLAINS, NY - On Monday, July 17, concerned Westchester community members, joined by Legislators Catherine Parker (D-7) and David Gelfarb (D-6), will rally outside the Westchester County Office building prior to the Board of Legislators’ meeting to urge the county to drop its plan to privatize Westchester’s airport. Residents fear that privatization will incentivize expansion of the airport, resulting in negative community, financial, and environmental impacts.
The county just released a shocking master plan, which calls for massive increases in the number of flights (ignoring current passenger caps) and development of a corner of the airport that drains into the Kensico Reservoir, which provides the drinking water for 9 million people - including most of Westchester and New York City.
Privatization, coupled with this master plan, could result in increased air and noise pollution, and potentially threaten groundwater and the vital Kensico Reservoir. Further, privatization could mean a loss of public accountability and control of the airport.
The bids from private companies to take over the Westchester Airport are due shortly before the rally. To date, there have been no public meetings held by the county regarding privatization of the airport. The Westchester County Board of Legislators must reject privatization and expansion of the airport for the sake of Westchester’s communities and environment.
